Understanding Missouri's Driving Without Insurance Laws
In Missouri, state law requires all vehicle owners to maintain a minimum level of liability insurance. This insurance protects both the driver and others on the road in the event of an accident.

The minimum level of coverage required is:
- $25,000 per person for bodily injury
- $50,000 per accident for bodily injury
- $25,000 per accident for property
- $25,000 for uninsured motorist coverage per person for bodily injury
- $50,000 for uninsured motorist coverage per accident for bodily injury
Drivers must show proof of insurance to any law enforcement officer when requested. If you can't show proof of insurance, you will be issued a traffic ticket.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, if you're convicted for not having insurance in St. Louis, or anywhere in Missouri, you will face a fine. Then, under Missouri Revised Statute §303.025 one of three things will happen to you:
- Four points will be added to your driving record (it only takes 8 points within 18 months to lose driving privileges in Missouri)
- The court may enter an order of supervision against you, which will be sent to the Department of Revenue so that they can monitor whether you are maintaining your liability insurance
- You may have your driving privileges revoked for a period of up to one year
Depending on whether you've been charged with driving without insurance previously, the specific penalties may be:
- First Offense:
- A fine not to exceed $500
