Throughout life, there are moments when we face unfair treatment, especially in situations where others hold the power to decide our future. How we navigate these experiences can shape our character and our understanding of justice, fairness, and resilience.

Think back to a time when you felt unfairly treated in a situation where someone else held the power to make decisions about your future. Reflect on how you managed the situation, what you learned about fairness and justice, and how it helped you grow as a person. Provide a thoughtful and personal reflection on the experience.

Contest Information

Essay Topic and Submission Guidelines

A 500-1,000 word essay about “Fairness in the Face of Adversity”

Reflect on a time when you felt treated unfairly in a situation where others held the power to make decisions about your future. Describe the experience, how you handled it, and what you learned about justice, fairness, and resilience. Provide a personal and thoughtful perspective.

For your submission, please:

  • Include your full name and an essay title
  • Write between 500 – 1,000 words (quality over quantity!)
  • Attach your essay as a PDF, txt, doc, or docx file
  • Submit by Sunday, January 14, 2024

One winner will be selected based on the quality of the essay and adherence to the submission guidelines. The winning essay should be well-written, grammatically correct, and offer a unique and personal perspective on the topic. Any accepted style (AP, MLA, Chicago, etc.) is allowed.

Scholarship Eligibility

To apply for the Combs Waterkotte 2024 scholarship, please send the following to combswaterkottescholarship@gmail.com by January 14, 2024 at 11:59 pm Central Time:

  • A college transcript (unofficial is acceptable) or an enrollment letter
  • Your essay
  • Your contact information
  • Your student number
  • Your school’s financial aid office information, including address and phone number
  • A resume or brief biography

We encourage applications from non-traditional and underrepresented students. As the scholarship funds will be sent directly to the winner’s school, we require proof of enrollment. High school students or adults planning to attend college or trade school but not yet enrolled are welcome to check back for future opportunities.

Award Details

The winner will be contacted via email on January 18, 2024. If the winner does not respond within 7 days or cannot be reached after two contact attempts, the runner-up will be selected.

The scholarship funds will be sent directly to the winner’s school.
